Copper Demand Surges as Global Supply Faces Historic Shortfall

Vancouver – Copper, often referred to as the backbone of electrification, is rapidly moving into a supply-demand imbalance that has not been seen in decades. According to McKinsey & Co, global copper demand is projected to reach 36.6 million tonnes annually by 2031, while supply is forecast to remain at around 30.1 million tonnes. This imbalance would result in a 6.5 million tonne deficit, the equivalent of losing the output of several of the world’s largest mines combined.

The drivers of this surge in demand are clear. Copper is central to renewable energy, electric vehicles, power grids, and infrastructure modernization. A single tonne of copper can power 100,000 mobile phones, run 400 computers, or deliver electricity to 30 homes. As the world transitions to low-carbon technologies, demand for copper is forecast to grow exponentially.

A new factor accelerating this trend is the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and data infrastructure. Data centers are highly energy-intensive and require vast amounts of copper for power distribution and cooling systems. Analysts suggest AI alone could add 5 million tonnes of copper demand by 2030, nearly doubling the already significant deficit.

At the same time, copper supply faces structural barriers. Ore grades at existing mines continue to decline, while new discoveries are scarce and take on average 16 years to move from discovery to production. Rising permitting hurdles and capital costs further limit the industry’s ability to respond quickly.

For investors, the picture is clear: copper is set to become one of the most strategically constrained commodities of the coming decade. Exposure to high-quality copper exploration and development projects offers leverage to this structural trend, creating significant opportunities for those positioned early.
